Believe
it or not, But before the Islamic revolution in 1979, Iran-Air
was the fastest growing airline in the world.
For
instance every year for the last five years before 1978 it
had bought more new planes and it had flown more passengers
to more destinations. Only in 1976 it carried twice as many
extra passengers as Pan Am, JAL and Sabena put together. In
that days it was the only airline flying London - New York
that could offer the passenger a choice of Jumbos: The 747-200B
or the new 747SP (Special Performer Jumbo covers the 6200
miles distance from N.Y to Tehran with a longest nonstop flight).
In 1976, Iran Air was better known as a loyal Boeing customer
and in this year 3 of the SP Jumbos Jets joined its fleet.
Iran
Air, with 9,800 employees, 16 wide body aircraft and 20 narrow
body aircraft in 1995, carried 5,776,000 passengers. In the
same year, Saudia Airlines, with 24,000 employees, 52 wide
body aircraft and 20 narrow body aircraft, carried 5,676,000
passengers. This shows Iran Air staff, all 9,800 of them,
have done a great job under very difficult circumstances.
